Monsoon Mommy and Baby: Health and Wellness

Monsoon season can be a beautiful time in India, but it’s also important to take extra care of yourself and your baby’s health during this time. Here are some tips for both moms and babies:

For Moms:

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and fluids like coconut water, fresh juices, and buttermilk to stay hydrated and flush out toxins. Monsoon can be surprisingly dehydrating! Make sure the water is boiled or filtered before consumption.
  • Eat healthy: Focus on a nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These foods will provide your body with the vitamins and minerals it needs to fight off infection. Include plenty of Vitamin C sources like oranges, amla (Indian gooseberry) and guavas.
  • Dress comfortably: Wear loose, breathable clothing made from cotton or linen. Avoid tight-fitting clothes and synthetic fabrics that can trap sweat and lead to rashes.
  • Boost immunity: Consider taking a daily probiotic supplement and talk to your doctor about prenatal vitamins with Vitamin D if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Beware of mosquitoes: Dengue fever is a concern during monsoon. Use mosquito repellent that is safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women, and wear long sleeves and pants when outside, especially during dusk and dawn.

For Babies:

  • Maintain hygiene: Wash your baby’s hands frequently with gentle baby soap, especially before eating and after coming indoors. This helps prevent the spread of germs.
  • Keep them dry: The damp monsoon weather can lead to diaper rash. Change diapers frequently and keep your baby clean and dry. Pat them dry thoroughly after baths, and avoid tight-fitting diapers.
  • Dress them right: Use soft, breathable cotton clothes for your baby. Avoid synthetic fabrics. During cooler weather, use a light blanket to keep them warm.
  • Monitor for infections: Watch out for signs of infections like a fever, cough, cold, or diarrhoea. If you notice any of these symptoms, consult your paediatrician.
  • Limit outdoor time: While fresh air is important, avoid taking your baby out during heavy rain or to places with stagnant water. This can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects.

Additional Tips:

  • Monsoon-proof your home: Keep your surroundings clean and free of stagnant water to prevent mosquito breeding. Use mosquito nets and screens on windows and doors.
  • Maintain good mental health: Monsoon weather can sometimes lead to feeling cooped up or low. Engage in activities that uplift your mood, like listening to music, reading, or spending time with loved ones.

By following these tips, you can help ensure a healthy and happy monsoon season for yourself and your baby in India. Remember, it’s always best to consult your doctor if you have any specific concerns.
