Monsoon season in India, roughly between June and September, brings a welcome respite from the scorching summer heat. However, it also brings challenges for travellers, especially moms with babies. But with a little planning and precaution, you can have a safe and enjoyable monsoon trip to India.

Here are some tips for monsoon travel and safety for moms and babies in India:

Planning:

  • Choose your destination carefully. Some regions in India experience heavier rainfall and flooding during the monsoon. It’s best to avoid these areas, especially if you’re travelling with a baby. Popular monsoon destinations in India include the Western Ghats (known for its lush greenery during this time), Munnar (a hill station with pleasant weather during monsoon), and Coorg (a coffee-growing region).
  • Pack light clothes made from breathable fabrics like cotton for your baby. You’ll also need a raincoat, an umbrella, and waterproof boots or shoes.
  • Bring a good supply of diapers and wipes. You may go through more than usual because of the humidity.
  • Pack a small medical kit with basic supplies like a thermometer, saline nasal spray, paracetamol for infants (consult a paediatrician before bringing any medication), and diaper rash cream.

Safety:

  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially during heavy rains. Avoid crowded places and slippery surfaces.
  • Don’t wade through flooded streets or streams. The current can be strong, and there may be hidden dangers beneath the water.
  • If you’re staying in a hotel, make sure it has a backup generator in case of power outages.
  • Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water during the monsoon. Dress your baby in long sleeves and pants in the evenings, and use a mosquito net when sleeping.

Here are some additional tips:

  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of bottled water to avoid dehydration.
  • Be careful about what you eat. Stick to cooked and freshly prepared foods to avoid stomach upsets.
  • Wash your hands frequently and keep your baby’s hands clean as well. This will help prevent the spread of germs.
  • Take breaks often and avoid overexerting yourself, especially in the heat and humidity.

By following these tips, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable monsoon trip to India with your baby.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind:

  • The monsoon season can disrupt transportation schedules. Be prepared for flight delays or cancellations.
  • Some tourist attractions may be closed during the monsoon season. Check opening hours before you go.

With a little planning and preparation, you can have a wonderful monsoon adventure in India with your baby.
