According to Indian Philosophy, it is believed that the unborn baby can hear the mother’s heartbeat when s/he is still in the womb. This impacts the reason why they stop crying when picked up and held near the breast, since they become calm after hearing the heartbeat.
Traditional medicine states that the fetus can hear the mother’s voice and the surrounding sounds from 7th month onwards. It is therefore imperative that the mother hears soothing sounds or songs that can impact the intellectual development of the child through the sense of hearing.
Several researches have been conducted to understand this experience. It was noted that the mother’s emotional wellbeing affects the baby. Hence, happy mothers lead to happy babies.
The experts of Garbhasanskar use various methods to ensure that the mothers are able to connect to their babies. These include:
- Positive Thinking
- Visualization techniques
- Music
- Relaxation techniques
- Belly Massage
The underlying premise is that with Garbhasanskar the “prakriti” (character) of the child is formed before the birth itself. This helps negate any effects of “vikruti” (abnormality). According to Mahabharata, it was said that Abhimanya got the knowledge of Chakravyuh formation when he was in his mother’s womb. Prahlad was spiritually inclined even though he was born in an Asura family because his mother listened to spiritual songs and hymns when she was expecting him. Though mythology has been showing evidence which modern people might refute, controlled studies related to Garbha Sanskar have shown positive proof that it is a scientific way of achieving mental, emotional and psychological well-being of the baby in the womb itself.
Whatever maybe the advantages of the Garbhasanskar, one cannot deny that it develops an unconditional bond between the mother and child later in life.
